The Creative Europe Project „New Standards from Europe“ is a multi-dimensional and collaborative project centered around the publication The New Standards Real Book: 101 Jazz Pieces by Female European Composers (Schott, April 2027) followed by a recording of arrangements of selected tunes led by Musicisti Italiani di Jazz (MIDJ). The goal of the project is to draw attention to European female role models and to promote gender equity in jazz as an art form, where women are currently severely underrepresented.
101 compositions by female jazz musicians representing all European regions were selected by a panel of experts under the guidance of Principal Investigator Monika Herzig (Professor of Artistic Research and Vice Rector for Diversity and Internationalization, Jam Music Lab University Vienna). The compositions are presented in Real Book format and can be used in a wide variety of settings – from solo instruments to jazz combos to larger ensembles, in schools, universities, amateur and professional groups. Ideally, the music will enter the canon of jazz standards and expand the sound palette of jazz. As Terri Lyne Carrington, the initiator of the New Standards collection (Berklee Press, 2022) formulated as the mission of the Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender Studies: “What would jazz sound like without patriarchy?” Let’s find out.
